The following is a custom species unique to this Sim. While unique to us, they may not be unique across the Federation and could be found on other Federation starships and starbases. Remember, new species are always being found and integrated within the Federation.

The Kalan are an Alpha Quadrant race of enthusiastic but headstrong humanoid canids and are a recent addition to the United Federation of Planets.

Home System:

  • Quadrant: Alpha
  • System Name: Jiro System
  • Companions: 18 planets in system, home world is moon orbiting 7th planet, a gas giant

Home Planet (moon):

The Kalan are a canine race from the Jiro system in the Alpha Quadrant. In recent years they have been developing toward warp technology and have only just become aware of life outside their planet. As new members to the Federation other races are still sometimes surprised by their appearance and likeness to Terran canids.

The Kalan home world is a moon orbiting a gas giant. Terrain across the moon varies but is prone to greater extremes of temperature than Earth experiences. Kalan’s orbit passes the upper atmosphere of the gas giant “Fylan” creating dramatic electromagnetic storms and spectacular ion clouds in the upper atmosphere.

Physically the Kalan are of a similar size to humans. They are bipedal and have opposable thumbs. Kalan are very genetically diverse and so coat colour and type as well as eye colour and face shape varies across their home world. Typically Kalan adjusted to new environments by evolving coat colours that could camouflage with the local fauna, e.g. White coats in Polar Regions. Although with the rise of major cities and transport hubs a great mix of coat types and face shapes can be seen together.

Kalan are technically omnivorous but tend to eat a primarily carnivorous diet. The Kalan saying, “If it doesn’t run, it isn’t food” reflects their dietary preferences. Some Kalan prefer to catch and kill their food themselves if in a position to do so. They dislike replicated food. An aspect of Terran cuisine that has captivated the Kalan is alcohol. Since the Kalan grew grain only for their prey’s consumption (rarely for their own) they had never developed a brewing culture on their home world. At first mistrustful of consuming “prey-food” even in brewed liquid form, the Kalan soon developed a taste for alcohol. Due to their accelerated metabolism Kalans bodies break down alcohol easily and many a cadet has been drunk under the table by their Kalan roommate.

Kalan are typically enthusiastic and headstrong. Kalan are able to work excellently as part of a team although they are not afraid of taking charge in a situation where they feel their judgment is superior. Kalan make exceptional scientists, tactical or security officers, pilots and medics; all roles where the Kalan can apply the spirit of the hunt in some way. They are unsuited however to purely administrative or political duties, becoming despondent without the thrill of the hunt.

Kalan was for many millennia a primordial moon isolated from the rest of the alpha quadrant by a temporal anomaly. In 2150 a Russian prototype space capsule containing its deceased experimental cargo, a dog called Laika, crashed into the surface. The canine genetic material from Earth was the seed of life on the primordial moon, and over millions of years in its relative time life evolved from this alien genetic material. The result was the Kalan race: a species of bipedal canines sharing characteristics of both humans and dogs.

Kalan has been of interest to a scientific team from Vulcan studying interplanetary seeding. Upon the Kalan developing warp technology the spacial disturbance caused by the experimental warp field destabilized the temporal anomaly that had kept the moon isolated for so many years. Kalan is now embarking on a period of rapid scientific and cultural change. Although accepted into the Federation as a peaceful and scientifically curious race there is a growing organization of Kalan religious terrorists that view this change in their society as blasphemy and are willing to use violence to stop it.

Kalan has developed a global government called the Kalan Assembly in the years since the temporal anomaly was punctured, as decisions on a global scale became increasingly required.

The hunt has long been part of Kalan culture and something that is sometimes referenced in their language. Phrases such as “good hunting” can be used in place of goodbye or as a question “good hunting?” to ask how a person has been faring. As the Kalan became more technologically oriented the “hunt” became an unstoppable search for undiscovered knowledge. Scientists became the new “heads of the hunt” and a period of rapid technological development was born. It is impossible to keep a secret from a Kalan once it has been hinted at, their instinct will drive them to hunt out the answer at almost any cost. This spirit of discovery and curiosity led to the Kalan introduction into the Federation. The first Kalan Starfleet graduates are just coming out of training and joining crews across the Federation.

The arts are an important part of Kalan society. Long inspired by the unique beauty of their neighboring gas giant, much of Kalan art and craft is inspired by the idea of the “wolf mother”. Body modification is common in some areas of Kalan culture, particularly some of the more traditional hunting tribes.

Kalan Mythology is greatly influenced by its planetary arrangement, with “Fylan” being the Kalan primary deity. The Kalans creation myth states that Fylan the mother wolf (and goddess of light) found Kalan in the darkness and took it into her care protecting it from the night. Worship of Fylan is something that continues to the modern day. With Kalan religious leaders heading demonstrations against warp travel on the grounds that traveling faster than light is blasphemy against a goddess of light. Small groups of these Kalan rebels have been responsible for terrorist attacks on many science outposts and the deaths of warp pioneers.

Whereas more progressive Kalan accept that the gas giant is not actually a deity, it is still responsible for making a moon that because of its distance from its star would normally be uninhabitable, habitable, and so to some extent the tale of Fylan rescuing Kalan from the black can be considered true.

Laika was the name chose for the Kalan first warp capable space vessel. The speed of change since the discovery of warp drive has driven some Kalan to form cults against scientific progress; the most extreme of these being a religious group. The Kalan have not developed replicator technology and despite receiving it from the Federation have little use for it.

Since the puncture of the temporal anomaly Kalan is now, for the first time open to trade from other worlds. The chief export is rare metals for study and gems for jewelry making and trade. Kalan craft items like stone totems and beadwork have become a new “exotic” novelty item for traders but do not attract big prices. Most imported items are resources for technological and scientific development.

The economy on the planet is in good health and benefiting immensely from the sudden and dramatic increase in trade.

In the past Kalan war clans amassed huge armies. Today’s Kalan is a peaceful place where the passionate pursuit of technology and exploration has united previously divided Kalan nations. The global government does maintain an army but its function is mainly to give physical training to adolescent Kalan in order to instill a sense of community.
